Plus Size Mother of the Bride Outfits – Louise Green with permission Is there any difference between a plus size mother of the groom dress for summer and a plus size mother of the bride dress for summer?
Guess what? Plus size mother of the groom dresses for summer are just like plus size mother of the bride dresses for summer. There are only two differences: You have to wait until the bride’s mother decides what type of dress she wants to wear before you get a shot, and you have more money to spend on your dress because you don’t have to pay for the wedding shindig.
Plus Size Mother of the Groom Dresses
You have to wait until the other mum chooses her dress because:
- Your dress should have the same level of formality as the mother of the bride’s dress.
- Your dress should not be the same color as the mother of the bride’s dress but your dress should harmonize with hers.
- Your dress should make you look hotter than the mother of the bride. (Just kidding.)
- Your dress should be approximately the same length as the mother of the bride’s dress.
- Your dress should be made of a somewhat similar type of fabric, if this is possible.
- If the mother of the bride is planning to wear a hat, you should wear a hat, or a fascinator, as well.
- If you want to wear something different, like a pantsuit, ladies’ suit, or bohemian vintage dress that Janis Joplin once wore, you should talk it over with the bride to be or the mother of the bride.
No matter how much you think this bride is beneath your son’s standing and social class, she will be the mother of your grandchildren, so play nice. Before taking the tags off any dress or gown, show the dress to your son’s fiancée.
Mother of the Bride or Groom Dresses for Summer
Summer in Seattle is like fall on the East Coast. Summer in the South is sticky and humid. Summer in LA can be smoggy and make your contact lenses rot out your eyes. (Not really, but that’s what it feels like.) Summer air conditioning can make you feel freezing and bother your sinuses. I think that the best idea is for the bride and groom to move the wedding to Maui, Hawaii or Venice, Italy. What the heck? You’re not paying for it.
Best Styles for Summer Weddings
If you will be going indoors with air conditioning, then going outdoors, then indoors at another venue, then dancing up a storm while piling up your new in-laws’ bar tab, you might want a dress with a jacket or bolero.
Here are items to look for in different jacket styles:
- Bolero Jacket: This is short like a shrug. It’s a cropped jacket.
- Sheer Sleeves: A sheer, long sleeved jacket is perfect for solving some plus sized dilemmas.
- Crocheted Jacket: Sometimes crochet looks tacky. Make sure it is well made. If done right, crochet is hot, as in sexy.
- Lace Bolero: This is my favorite. I love lace boleros and jackets. And, you might be able to wear this again…like to your son’s next wedding.
Summer Fabrics for Mother of the Bride or Groom Dresses
Obviously, you want something that is lightweight in summer (unless you’re in Seattle). So lighter, thinner fabrics include:

If you are looking for a cheaper plus size dress for summer, try manmade materials, such as:
- Polyester
- Rayon
- Nylon
- Acetate
Manmade fibers can be used to create formal or informal dresses.
I hope you are happy that your son is finally getting married. I wish this would rub off on the other young men in the US who seem to want to play Peter Pan for all eternity.
