Most of the time we think of the father of the bride as just the initial moneybags behind his daughters wedding. Im not sure thats as true in todays world as in the past, but the father of the bride has often been relegated to a standby role except for walking his daughter down the aisle and handing her over to the man that, hopefully, shell be married to forever.
However, there are many things that the father of the bride can do that might actually be beneficial to the wedding couple. Here are 5 ideas to employ:
1. Help find a place for the reception. Not only would this be a great first step, especially if the father is going to be assuming many of the expenses, but in many cases the father of either the groom or the bride can actually get a great deal on reception halls. Many American Legion halls have large rooms big enough to hold a lot of people and if either was a veteran they get special deals for renting them.
2. Let them book the limousine. This isnt something thats always needed but if a limousine is going to be the ride of choice, its something the brides father can handle easily enough. In many communities there arent lots of choices, but even if they are some places will allow test rides, and why not let the brides father have some fun?
3. Let them initiate the conversation with the church. If the bride is hoping to get married in the family church her parents probably know the reverend pretty well, and it would be a great time for them to be able to talk to that person about something special. They might even find that theres reception space in the church that can be obtained at a special deal. Of course, the couple needs to close the deal.
4. Let the brides father help in selecting where youre going for your honeymoon. Once again, although the couple wants to make the final decision, if the father is someone great with details it cant hurt to let him help in finding out just how much things will cost in places you might want to go that youve never visited before. Just give him a few places youd like to visit then let him go. Its always nice when someone else can help you research and let you attend to other things, and you dont have to pay him for it.
5. Ask him to get your mother out of your hair for awhile. This probably isnt fair but I know few brides that dont have a moment or two where they wish their mothers would give them some space. Your father will understand and gladly take your mother somewhere for awhile, even if its only for a couple of hours. This is a great time to lean on your father when needed.
