There have been many weddings that have had outer space themes, but realistic and science fiction style. But there hasnt been a true wedding in outer space yet. However, there was one that came close and two companies vying for the opportunity to have the first one come true.

The one that came close was a wedding ceremony held in 2003 between a bride in Texas and a cosmonaut that was in space. The cosmonaut was Yuri Malenchenko and the bride was Ekaterina Dmitriev, and she had a cut-out of him next to her as she took the vows. That was in August and they followed it up with a more traditional wedding ceremony the following June.

Outside of that there have been no other ceremonies, but Virgin Airlines owner Richard Branson is hoping his company will create the first aircraft that can literally reach the boundaries of space and allow him, as captain of the craft, to conduct the first wedding ceremony in space. They had hoped to have their craft ready in 2009 but it didnt happen and thus the couple that had been slated to get married had to go the more traditional route.

That has allowed another company, First Advantage, to try to take their shot at conducting the first wedding ceremonies in space. The name of the craft that they were hoping to use is called Rocket Plane XP, and they were hoping to have the first ceremony sometime this year. Two things happened though. One, the craft, which would have stayed in space only an hour, has yet to be cleared for flight, and two, there came a question as to whether the wedding would be legal since no country can claim outer space and thus its in interesting legal territory.

Still, its going to happen one of these days, and if my predictions mean anything, itll probably happen via a Russian spacecraft since theyre already started the process of flying civilians into space to help their space program stay aloft. Almost immediately it will probably be the most expensive wedding in history, since they charge around $20 million per customer.

How would that be for an unforgettable wedding ceremony?
